CHAPTER SIXTEEN

I wake up in the morning and stretch, pulling my covers closer. I pause, opening my eyes and sitting up. Last I remember I was sitting in a chair, watching a movie. At some point during the second movie Leo’s chair had slid closer to mine and my head had ended up on his shoulder. I must have fallen asleep.

I lift the covers and look down at myself.

I’m wearing the same clothes as last night, my clothes from NESS. Putting them on for Leo had been lighthearted and funny, but now I can’t wait to get them off. It’s a reminder of everything I’ve lost, and everything I will probably never see again.

I secretly wonder if some day, when all of this has passed, I’ll be allowed to make a trip back into space to see my family, just once even.

I hear a group of people pass, their muffled voices talking quickly. I push the covers away and walk to my door, opening it. I look down the hall and see a group of staff members disappearing around the curve. A few minutes later another group appears. Carts of linens and flowers roll behind them without direction or anything pulling them.

“What’s going on?” I ask loudly.

One of the female staff members looks at me, “The Annual Ball is tomorrow,” she says, shooting me an odd look.

I’d almost forgotten, have the days really passed that quickly? Tomorrow Oslo will announce my impending marriage, to a son of his choosing... or will it be my choosing?

My stomach flutters nervously at the thought.

I have a sudden fear that Oslo will decide to choose for me and pick Fin, just because it seems like I’m having some crap luck lately. Get in trouble on the Ness? Good timing, we need to send a Human to Earth! You need to marry a son of the Trulonian leader? Why not marry the one that hates you the most!

Maybe if I make a logical decision, one Oslo can mostly agree with, he’ll let me marry who I please.

Fin aside, I have three choices: Canon, Leo, and Wren.

My heart screams Leo. Over and over. It should be an easy choice.

Canon and Wren were kind to me, and gave me time to get to know them, but they seemed to do it more out of obligation than anything else, both having other matters to attend to that day. Leo gave me his whole day, and all of his attention. He was flirty, and kind, and I can’t ignore how good that kiss made me feel.

Leo wants to be with me and I know I can be happy with him.

But, is that who Oslo will see as best for me? His carefree son who doesn’t have much interest in political dealings or following in his father’s footsteps. Would that be enough for a Trulonian and Human pairing? Oslo may want me in the spotlight, where Earth’s Humans can see me making an effort to join the two races, all while happily living amongst his family.
